I shared my diagnosis online and found community

My MS Diagnosis Campaign

Antonio from the United States was stunned when a phone call from his doctor revealed the symptoms he was experiencing were caused by multiple sclerosis. After feeling isolated after his diagnosis, he decided to share his story on social media to help other young people living with MS. Speaking openly soon connected him with people across the globe, and now he uses his platform to raise awareness and support others living with MS.

It was a typical hot and humid day in San Antonio, Texas, as always. However, this particular day, Friday 8th January 2022, would forever be in my memory.

I received a phone call from my doctor, who had me undergo an MRI a few weeks ago. I was hopeful that the test would provide answers to my ongoing health concerns. So, I hurriedly pulled over to answer the call, convinced that I was simply experiencing stress and anxiety. I assured myself that I was in good health, I was always in good health, drank tons of water, and ate a clean diet along with working out daily, so I assume there is nothing wrong!

To my surprise, my doctor seemed hesitant to speak. After a brief pause, she explained that my MRI test results revealed several lesions along my spine and in my brain. She elaborated on the implications of these findings and mentioned that the symptoms I was experiencing could be related to a condition called multiple sclerosis (MS).

I was in disbelief.

Just yesterday, everything seemed normal. How could a young, healthy male be diagnosed with MS? I had always assumed that this disease primarily affected older individuals. The realization of my diagnosis left me feeling isolated and uncertain about the path ahead.

I couldn’t help, but feel like I wasn’t alone in this struggle! While I was relaxing on my couch at home, I decided to explore TikTok to find others who were experiencing similar challenges. However, I was surprised to discover that there weren’t many young people openly discussing this on social media. It made me wonder if I was the only young person going through this illness. Where was the awareness, the social media presence, of other young adults facing this?

Determined to make a difference, I decided to share my journey with MS on social media. I created a TikTok account (@mswarriorantonio) to shed light on MS, raise awareness, advocate for my illness, and offer support to others who may feel isolated in their battle. As I began sharing my story, I was met with overwhelming love and support from people around the world.

My journey on social media has taken me on an incredible journey. I’ve collaborated with companies in America and across the globe, been featured on the news in Detroit, Europe, and Ireland, even appeared on several podcasts. I’ve also been honored to be featured twice in the National MS Society (NMSS).

While I understand that MS can be a difficult and challenging illness, I don’t regret it. It has given me so many opportunities and has helped me grow as a person. I’ve learned to appreciate the little things in life and to carry on with my new life with resilience and determination.I’m not filled with sadness or regret. Instead, I’m filled with gratitude and joy. I’m grateful for the support I’ve received from others and for the opportunities that MS has given me. I’m grateful for the chance to share my story and to help others who may be struggling with this illness.

Thank you to World MS Day for giving me this opportunity to reflect on my accomplishments and to share my story with MS. I hope that my journey can inspire and support others who may be facing similar challenges. You got this don’t give up, keep your head high and remember things happen for a reason 🧡

Our thanks to Antonio for sharing his MS diagnosis story on the World MS Day map. If you have an MS diagnosis story to share you can add your experience to the World MS Day map.
